Mentor Program

POMAC Mentor Program

What does it take to become a successful outdoors communicator?

The ingredients are many—a pinch of this, a daub of that, and a mixture of talent, determination, persistence and a love of the outdoors are all part of it.

So is knowledge, acquired largely through experience and an understanding of the industry. These are the basis of the POMAC mentor program.

Most successful outdoors communicators got there the hard way. They paid their dues in learning their craft, and they benefitted from experience. They know how to juggle words, sentences and paragraphs, how to tell a story in words or on film, how to create interest from their viewership, readership or listeners, and how to make an impact with editors and producers.

In the face of increased competition for air time and column inches, this can be a daunting task for those breaking into the field. Our mentor program helps emerging communicators shorten their learning curve by matching them with successful, experienced members in their discipline.

We have seasoned POMAC members from all communication disciplines ready to take eager newcomers under their wing and help them overcome some of the inevitable hurdles, to critique their work in a constructive manner, and to lead them to newfound successes.

The Mentor Program is open to student, associate, or active POMAC members seeking this help. If you’re interested in becoming a mentee, or if you’re willing to take on a rewarding role as a mentor, contact POMAC’s Executive Director, T.J. Schwanky, at: outdoorwritersofcanada@shaw.ca.
